Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1877
- In B.E.2420 (A.D.1877), Bishop Louis Way found that the Catholic community to be
further explored was the "Hanpaeng" Catholic community. The Catholic Vietnanese
had been originally shifted from from Samsen Parish Church community and the new
Christians of the time.
- Father Lombard was the first parish priest who founded the Banpaeng church
under the name "The Mother of God" ('Wat Pra Mae Mary'). The church was first built
in bamboo in the year B.E. 2420.
- A year later, Father Dabin who was the assistant parish priest started the works
to expand the church. The Catholic population was about 200. The bamboo church lasted
for about 5 years and became too old and began to decay. Father Dabin constructed the
second church in wood having Bishop Louis Way to present the opening ceremony on
January 14 th, B.E.2428.
- In B.E.2448 Father Quontric built the third brick and concrete church in place of the
old wooden one. Father Quontric was the sixth parish priest of the church and named
the church "The Holy Name of Jesus" which has been the name of the church until today.
- In the evening of one day in September, B.E. 2472, the church caught fire and the
cause was not known. The fire took place 30 years after the church was built. Father
Soonthorn Wisesrath who was the seventeenth parish priest repaired the church. Until
the term of Father Warong Sukkhapath who became the nineteenth parish priest the
fourth church was built and completed in the end of the year B.E.2481. The church
lasted for about 47 years. The fifth church fas thus been founded on January 13th, B.E.
2528 which was the aniversary feast day on January 11th, B.E.2530.
- At present the thirty third parish priest of the church is Father Anucha Chaivadej
following Father Chestha Chaivadej and Father Komsan Yanchareun respectively.
The Holy Name of Jesus Church is not on the way to cover the age of 122 years
showing the freedom for the Thais to believe in any religion. The people of "Banpaeng"
Catholic community pray in the name of Jesus for the ethereal happiness and peace of mankind.
