 Buddhist Lental Candle Procession in Ubon Ratchathani, August 2 - 3, 2012

The devout Buddhist of Ubon Ratchathani have long been known for their devotion to their religion especially by the procession Buddhist Lental Candle at the advent of Buddhist Lent. The occasion also represents and effort to support local tradition.
To start with, the lead candle graciously granted by His Majesty the KING to Ubon Ratchathani will lead the procession to the temple under royal patronage. However a host of other festive activities are in the waiting.

Asanaha Bucha or Asanha Puja (Day before the Buddhist Lent) or (Full Moon Day)

Celebrated in Thailand on the first full moon of the eighth lunar month, Asanha Bucha Day marks the first public sermon given by Buddha, which took place at Deer Park in Benares, India. In this initial sermon, Buddha presented the Four Noble Truths to five ascetics. While the ascetics believed in self-mortification, he taught that the cessation of desire was the key to enlightenment.

Buddhist Lent Day (Khao Phansa)

Buddhist Lent Day, a period of three lunar months during the rainy season when monks are required to remain in one wat and when many laypersons adopt more ascetic practices. In Thailand, it has long been customary for men to be ordained temporarily as novices or monks for a lenten period.

TAK BAT DOK MAI (Merit-Making Festival)
At Wat Phra Buddha Bat, Saraburi Province
This impressive merit-making ceremony coincides with the start of the annual three-month Rains Retreat, when Buddhist monks must remain in their monasteries. Devotees offer flowers and incense to a procession of monks who then ascend to the Holy Footprint where they present the offerings as tribute.

Longan known in Thai as lamyai is one of the size fruits grown in northern Thailand, and the peak of the harvest season occurs during August. This fair, held in the provincial capital of Lamphun about half and hours south of Chiang Mai, features a contest to judge the best fruit and another to select the annual Miss Lamyai
RAMBUTAN FAIR, August
At Amphoe Muang, Surat Thani Province
The first rambutan tree was planted in Surat Thani in 1926, and this fair celebrates the delicious fruit, which now grows widely in the area.
Highlights include exhibitions of ideal products and ornamental, plants, floats adorned with rambutan and other fruits and demonstrations of trained monkeys who harvest coconuts from trees

Throughout Thailand public buildings are decorated to honour Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on the occasion of her birthday.
The most splendid are to be seen in Bangkok particularly along Ratchadamnoen Avenue and in the area around the Grand Palace where both government offices and streets are garlanded with coloured lights.
